Waste heaps from the Leighton Iron Furnace
A casual glance would not notice anything out of the ordinary about these hillocks and undulations by Leighton Beck. On closer inspection, a large area is covered by slag and cinder which is now almost completely grassed over. Remnants of this slag can be found elsewhere in the vicinity, suggesting that someone was disposing of it widely. Alternatively, it could have been used as a surface for tracks. SD4877 : Plaque for Leighton iron furnace commemorates the furnace which operated here between 1716 and 1803.
