The Avenue from between the columns of the Chapel at Gibside Hall
The Avenue from between the columns of the Chapel at Gibside Hall
In 1759 the local architect James Payne was commissioned by the coal magnate George Bowes to design and build an eye-catching chapel to stand at the Southern end of the grand avenue of trees on the Gibside estate. It wasn't completed until 1816, but the resulting Palladian style masterpiece is superb.
