Great Hall, Bothwell Castle
Great Hall, Bothwell Castle
The Great Hall was built in the early 15th century and extensively reconstructed in the 16th. The lower floor contains a portcullis and drawbridge chamber over the entrance, together with a hall which was probably used by the lord's retainers and which served as a garrison quarters for men-at arms in times of siege. The door to the wall-walk on the north 'wing' wall was reached by the narrow stair and not directly from the hall. It could be barred from the outside, thus allowing the defenders to escape along the wall if the donjon were captured.

The upper floor contains a handsome apartment which was the lord's private chamber, or 'solar'. Unlike the garrison on the floor below, the lord had a private means of escape from the castle, through a mural passage in the south wall directly to the wall-walk of the south 'wing' wall from which he could descend by way of the stair in the prison-tower and leave by the postern gate below.
