Livingstone And The Lion
Impressed by the scale of this group of bronze figures, I asked who the artist was and was told they had been cast in Ireland. What the young lady, half my age, said next left me momentarily speechless with amazement. The design was by none other than Ray Harryhausen, the great stop-motion animator who populated American movies in the 1950s-60s with Flying Saucers, the memorable monsters of Sinbad films and the mythological creatures of Ancient Greece as in "Jason and the Argonauts", among others. I was told Harryhausen had taken a keen interest in developments at Blantyre because he had married into an American branch of Livingstone's descendants. One of Livingstone's sons died fighting for the Union in the Civil War at Gettysburg and is buried there.
