Carbisdale Castle, Inveroykel Culrain, Ardgay
Category B Listed Baronial mansion probably by John Robertson. Possibly incorporating and on the site of former Culrain Lodge. It was built between 1906 – 1917 for the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland. In 1933 the castle was bought by the Norwegian Colonel Theodore Emile Salvesen (1863–1942) head of the Christian Salvesen dynasty. During the Second World War, Carbisdale Castle was used as a royal palace for Norwegian King Haakon VII (1872-1957) and his son, Prince Olav (1903-1991). During his residence at the castle, he supervised the training of the Norwegian army in Scotland. In 1945 the Castle was donated to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA), together with its valuable art and entire estate. The SYHA were unable to meet the expensive maintenance of the castle and it fell into disrepair and was put up for sale in 2014. In September 2016, the castle was purchased by FCFM Group Ltd. who sold it again in October 2022. It was purchased by Lady Samantha Kane of Carbisdale, who resorted the castle as her private residence. It is now marketed as "A World Class Private Members' Club" and wedding and events venue at which members can stay.
