The statue commemorates the popular broadcaster, climber and writer Tom Weir MBE (29th December 1914 - 6th July 2006). To mark the centenary of his birth, the statue was unveiled on 29th December 2014 by Cameron McNeish and Jimmy MacGregor MBE, in the presence of Tom's widow Rhona and many onlookers. The sculptor was Sean Hedges-Quinn, and the setting is Tom Weir's Rest, an area in the village of Balmaha. (Summarised from a plaque beside the statue.)
