The gardens of Burrswood Hospital
The gardens of Burrswood Hospital
Burrswood was built between 1831 and 1838 by Decimus Burton. in a Tudor Style. John Newman in Pevsner's Buildings of England: West Kent and The Weald describes the garden front seen here as "The garden front is straightforward enough, four gables with tall chimneys between them." He is completely scathing though about the other side: "But on the entrance side the gallimaufry of motifs thrown together without any sense of scale or placing is almost unbelievable. Sham gables, lancets and eyebrow pediments jostle more authentically Tudor motifs. How could the architect of the Hyde Park Screen and Holwood handle another style so ineptly?" It is now part of Burrswood Hospital.

Burrswood Hospital describes itself as a "Christian hospital and place of healing". It is to be found at the end of a half mile long drive, leading off the triangular green at the northern end of Groombridge. In 1948, the land and buildings making up the core of the present-day Burrswood estate were purchased.

It has a tea room which is open to the public and extensive gardens which you are allowed to walk around. This looks up towards the oldest part of the present hospital.
