Boat arriving at Urquhart Castle jetty
Urquhart Castle is a much-visited site on the western bank of Loch Ness. Although local buses and a longer-distance coach route stop at the castle, there is also a boat which brings tourists along Loch Ness to the castle.

This image shows a boat arriving at Urquhart Castle jetty.
Urquhart Castle
Situated in a stunning location on the north side of Loch Ness, this castle had a turbulent history for around 500 years from the 1200s.

It changed hands many times, between the English and Scots around the early 14th century, the Scottish Crown and the MacDonald Lords of the Isles in the 15th and 16th centuries, and finally in the late 17th century when a garrison loyal to the protestant monarchy of William & Mary held off a larger Jacobite force. When the last soldiers left in 1692 they blew up parts of the castle to prevent any further use.

The castle is now owned by The National Trust for Scotland and is under the care of Historic Scotland.

A visitor centre, from which there is a stunning view of the castle, was constructed in 2002 and houses a shop, café and audio visual theatre.
Loch Ness
Loch Ness is one of Scotland's biggest lochs. At 23 miles long and more than a mile wide, it is the second largest by surface area. It is also the second deepest, at more than 200m at its deepest point. But if you measure it by the volume of water it holds, Loch Ness is the biggest loch of all.

The loch occupies part of the Great Glen, a fault line which crosses the Scottish highlands from Fort William to Inverness.

A mythical monster is said to live in the Loch Ness. But what would it feed on?
