New Kilpatrick Cemetery: base of the Antonine Wall
For a view from the other end, and for the main discussion of the features evident in this section, see NS5572 : New Kilpatrick Cemetery: base of the Antonine Wall.

Near this end, an original culvert can be seen: NS5572 : Culvert in stone base of the Antonine Wall.

For other views, see NS5572 : One of two sections of the foundations of the Antonine Wall in New Kilpatrick Cemetery and NS5572 : The information board in the New Kilpatrick Cemetery. The older sign at this end reads "Stone base of the Antonine Wall / Built by the Romans from Forth to Clyde A.D. 142".

Two preserved sections of the stone base of the Wall are exposed to view in this cemetery; the present picture shows the more westerly of them.
New Kilpatrick Cemetery

The cemetery, also known as Hillfoot Cemetery, opened in 1903, and is on the northern side of Boclair Road. Between the Wars (c.1922), it was extended to the north. Its former lodge, at the SW corner, is now a private residence. The line of the Antonine Wall passes through the cemetery, changing direction near the crest of the hill, and two sections of the stone base of the Wall are preserved and open to view (one since 1903, the other since 1921). As mentioned in the cemetery's listing text LinkExternal link (at Historic Environment Scotland) the pathways in the cemetery's northern half were laid out to form the outline of a Roman centurion's helmet.
