Castles of Munster: Butlerstown, Waterford (1)

Built on a rock outcrop, this much altered tower has a C19 house attached to it built by the Backas family who had bought the castle after it had been damaged by fire in 1794. They also restored the tower providing new turrets, a parapet, and new windows. The tower had originally been built by the Nugent family after they obtained the estate from a marriage to a Butler heiress. In 1544 the Sherlocks bought it and held it until its sale in the C19 to the Backas.
