Mountshannon House, Castleconnell, Limerick (1)
These are the sombre ruins of Mountshannon House. It was built in the mid-C18 and purchased by John Fitzgibbon from the White family in c1765. His son John Fitzgibbon inherited the property and became Attorney General for Ireland in 1783, then Lord Chancellor of Ireland in 1789. He was also elevated to the peerage later that same year with the title of Earl of Clare. The house was built in the Neo-Palladian style, the 7 bay entrance having four ionic columns added in 1813 during remodelling by the architect Lewis Wyatt. It was burnt in 1920 during the War of Independence when many of the "Big Houses" were fired.
