Melancholy Thistles (Cirsium heterophyllum) on road verge near Newshield
The Melancholy thistle despite its name has no sharp spines. It has large attractive single flowers and produces seeds much sought after by some birds, particularly finches.

The name 'Melancholy thistle' comes from the drooping of the heavy flower before it is fully out looking rather sad on their tall, slender, white-haired stems. This appearance gave rise by the 'Doctrine of Signatures' to the herbalist use of the plant to treat depression or melancholia. Culpepper considered that a decoction of this Thistle in wine 'being drank expels superfluous melancholy out of the body and makes a man as merry as a cricket.'
