NT2539 : Kingsmeadows House
taken 9 years ago, near to Peebles, Scottish Borders, Scotland
A B-listed mansion in Peebles, on the south bank of the River Tweed, built for £600 in 1795 for Sir John Hay, an Edinburgh banker. He had 15 children and additions were made in 1811, and further additions in1855. It was used as an emergency maternity hospital in WWII and bought by Standard Life in 1952 for use as an emergency office in the event of nuclear attack and as an archive store. In 1996 major repairs were carried out and conversion to flats and conference facilities, with further refurbishment in 2000.
In 2014 it was on the market for £2.5m but with no takers it was sold at auction to Granton Homes. The Peebles Community Trust had hoped to buy the estate and create a community hub. It is now being converted into 12 apartments, with 7 ha of grounds, along the River Tweed. Link and there is a planning application to build nine new flats in an apartment block to the east of the existing house. Link
