Banks on Great Underbank
Although Great Underbank takes its name from being under the high bank (geographical feature) on which stands the Marketplace, one might think it is named after the number of banks (financial institutions) that are found on the street. On the right is the HSBC bank, formerly the Midland Bank. Out of shot on the left is the NatWest bank SJ8990 : Underbank Hall. The building facing us on Bridge Street is the former Union Bank of Manchester SJ8990 : Union Bank of Manchester Building which became part of Barclays. That building was for several years occupied by the Bank Fashion store.
