Phoenix House, Queen Street, Newcastle
Part of the rebuilding of the area after a fire in 1854. Outline plan by John Dobson, the buildings by William Parnell. Phoenix House is a handsome and much becolumned curved building, built in 1863 for the Royal Insurance Company, whose arms survive above the main entrance (NZ2563 : Detail of Phoenix House, Queen Street, Newcastle). Grade II listed.
Now flats, with an Indian restaurant occupying the ground floor, and dramatically loomed over by the New Tyne Bridge (NZ2563 : New Tyne Bridge, Newcastle).
