NS5174 : Gate on right of way to Craigton

Gate on right of way to Craigton
Gate on right of way to Craigton
This is a continuation of the path shown in NS5173 : Path to Craigton. It leads from Cochno Road to Craigton, and it is one of East Dunbartonshire's core paths, as well as being a right of way (according to the council's online core path mapping).

The path itself is an old one, appearing even on the first-edition OS map (surveyed in 1861). At present, this path to Craigton is part of a much longer route, the Clyde Coastal Path.

For a view of the gate in context, see NS5174 : Gate on the path to Craigton, an earlier picture taken when the signs that can now be seen on it were not present (for the path itself, compare also NS5174 : Path to Faifley).

As noted there, the path is well-made up to this point. Its continuation leads, in the present picture, straight ahead; it can be picked out indistinctly as a slightly raised way, directly behind the gate: see NS5174 : Path to Craigton, taken while following that route.

The quality of waymarking also deteriorates markedly at this point (compare NS5174 : Waymarker on path to Craigton, taken not far ahead), and it would be as well to become acquainted with the route before setting out.

As I crossed the field (NS5174 : Path to Craigton), I noted some cattle in a distant part of it, but the bull, if present, did not put in an appearance.

[As for the two warning signs, although their text is easily legible in the picture itself, it is worth giving here, solely in order to make it available to text searches: "Bull in field" and "Caution: Cows with calves can be aggressive".]
Path from Faifley to Craigton
The path (which is just a small part of the much longer Clyde Coastal Path) is a little over two miles long. From Faifley to Cochno Road, it is a West Dunbartonshire Core Path; from Cochno Road to Craigton, an East Dunbartonshire Core Path (and a right of way).
