Stanway water mill - auxiliary drive
Stanway water mill - auxiliary drive
The pit wheel on the left drives the stones via a combined layshaft and great spur wheel drive off to the left. To the right it drives the auxiliary machinery by a pinion and a pair of bevel gears operating a square vertical shaft. This goes up to the bin floor where it drives a layshaft operating a wire machine, elevators and the sack hoist. The lever at the bottom edge of the frame pulls the auxiliary drive pinion out of gear. This is a truly spectacular example of a working mill.
