NS4179 : Common Blue butterfly at Pappert Hill
taken 7 years ago, near to Bonhill, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

Common Blue butterfly at Pappert Hill
Polyommatis icarus ♂
While photographically recording (for my own interest) the diversity of the heath spotted-orchids in NS4179 : Grassland near Nobleston Wood, I came across this butterfly. My usual experience of this species is that they are abundant in certain areas, but that they rarely settle for long enough to be photographed.
In this part of the country, there is normally just one generation a year. The caterpillar's foodplant is often said to be bird's-foot-trefoil, but they also feed on several other widespread plants of the same family.
