I note that several contributors have submitted images of the six classical columns that stand near the western fringe of Harlow Carr Gardens, but only one or two give any indication as to why they are here. The columns were moved here for decorative purposes in 1961 after lying in storage for twenty years or more following the demolition of the Cheltenham Spa Rooms which stood on the corner of Ripon Road and Kings Road next to the Royal Hall. The Cheltenham Spa Rooms had lasted a century [1835] before their demise, and had been built as a venue for concerts and dances, whilst behind the building were pleasure gardens and at one time a boating lake. The site of the former spa rooms became a car park for decades and presented a rather scruffy corner on one of the most prominent sites in town, the car park occasionally being covered by temporary buildings for conferences and trade exhibitions. Finally in 1999/2000 a replacement building was constructed on the site, this being 'Hall M' and part of the exhibition complex. The frontage is a sort of modern pastiche of the original with six classical style columns supporting a glass and steel portico.
