Thirlwall Castle
Thirlwall Castle
This stark ruin stands on a slope above the Tipalt Burn overlooking the cottages of Holmhead. It was built largely from stone plundered from Hadrian's Wall. No doubt much of this stone later found its way into the adjacent farmhouse. To prevent further deterioration, stabilisation work and tree clearance from the masonry was undertaken by Northumberland National Park.
