This splendid building with a number of features of interest dates from the 12th century and was restored by David Brendon in 1872. William Cobbett, visiting the village on his travels, said that the church was like a small cathedral. St Michael and All Angels has two Norman doorways, a 15th century font, the Howe memorial to the family from Cassey Compton and a headstone brought in from the churchyard to Honest Jhon Stockwell (actual spelling of name) who died of the plague in 1665. It was Grade I listed on 26th January 1961 and is unusual in that light in the body of the church is provided by the clerestory windows. In the 8th century the village was recorded as Wudiandun - the hill of Wudia - and from 1891 until 1961 the village had a station on the Midland and South West Junction Railway which ran between Cheltenham and Cirencester.
