Shoebury boom
A post-war structure, formerly much longer than its current 2 km, intended to defend the Thames against hostile shipping. It replaced an earlier parallel boom. There was a similar boom extending from the Kent shore, together they restricted shipping to a more easily defended gap. Listed as an Ancient Monument.
