Bracken spraying helicopter near Langleeford
Taking off from a field near Langleeford after a chemical refill, spraying was taking place in some location to the north. The Squirrel helicopter equipped with spray equipment is operated by PDG Helicopters and Heli-Highland. Bracken is spreading widely over the upland farms in this area. It is said to reduce the potential grazing area available to livestock, makes the task of gathering stock more difficult, replaces other important habitats such as heath-land and species rich grassland, harbours sheep ticks, and can poison stock and have a negative impact on human health.

Aerial application is currently approved for applying asulam (Asulox), which has a greater specificity against ferns, but not glyphosate (Roundup). It is suited to treating large uniform areas of uninterrupted bracken on even slopes but care is necessary to reduce drift and causing damage to other vegetation, sensitive ecological sites and to avoid pollution of water courses.
