Central Exchange Buildings, Grainger Street, Newcastle
The south-west domed corner of John Wardle's triangular building bounded by Grainger, Market and Grey Streets. Pevsner speculates that Wardle took at least some inspiration from London schemes of John Nash. Dated 1837-38. Grade II* listed.
The original interiors ("of unspeakable splendour") were destroyed by fire in 1900, but their replacement is worth a look: NZ2464 : Central Arcade, Grainger Street, Newcastle.
Down Grainger Street is Grey's Monument, a 135-foot Greek Doric column designed by Benjamin Green and erected in 1838. The statue of Grey is by E.H. Baily. Grade I listed.
