SS Canberra was a P & O passenger liner/cruise ship that was laid down in 1957, entered service in 1961 and was decommissioned in 1997, not long after this photograph was taken. She was 820' overall with a gross tonnage of 45,000. She was of turbo-electric propulsion with 85,000 shaft horsepower on two shafts. Steam was raised at 750 psi and 960 degrees Fahrenheit in Foster Wheeler external superheater D-type (ESD) boilers. These were oil-fired and this is the furnace front of one of the boilers. The burners used steam jet atomisation. As built there was also an auxiliary boiler for harbour service. The boilers were mounted far aft abaft of the propulsion motors and engine room. They were serviced by the two iconic tall and slender buff coloured stacks near the stern.

The engine room and control console are seen here - SU4011 : Southampton Western Docks - SS Canberra engine room.
