Railway bridge over the River Nene, Peterborough
Railway bridge over the River Nene, Peterborough
The bridge, which spans the River Nene to the south of Peterborough railway station, carries two tracks of the East Coast Main Line (ECML). It was built in 1924 when the main line was doubled to four tracks.
The green structure which can just be seen behind the bridge is the Nene Viaduct, which was built by Sir William Cubitt (17851861) and his son Joseph Cubitt (1811-1872) for the Great Northern Railway (GNR) and was completed in 1849. A Grade II listed structure, it is the last remaining cast iron bridge on a British main railway line.
