Stobars Hall, Kirkby Stephen
Stobars Hall, Kirkby Stephen
"Stobars Hall, an elegant mansion, on an elevated site half a mile west of the town, erected in 1829 by the late James Brougham esq. is now the seat of Richard Bovill Thompson esq. D. L., J. P."
Kelly's Directory of Westmorland (1906)

On Saturday 10th June 2000 the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald reported that 25 years earlier (in 1975):
"The first child to be born to a family at Stobars Hall, Kirkby Stephen, for 111 years returned home from a Kendal maternity home. The boy, Richard Allan Webster Hewetson, was the son of Tatton Hewetson and his wife, formerly Miss Gillian Mary Marr, Sunderland. The previous birth relating to the hall was that of Gerard Elyetson Thompson, in 1864."

The building is 'L' shaped in plan and mainly 2 storeys high. Towers to the south and west, north wing, and crenellation probably added in 1866. The hall, a Grade II Listed Building (1145008) is now a residential care home.

STOBARS’ HALL.
Hail Stobars, hail ! from thy high hill,
We gaze and look, and wonder still:
What a landscape greets our eyes
Spread beneath the lofty skies;
Loveliest place of all the North,
Art did much to bring thee forth;
BROUGHAM ! thy honour’d NAME shall be,
Transmitted to posterity;
In future ages will be sung —
‘The PATRON of the POET young.’— SAM DOWELL.
