New public square off Wellington Street
The square is to be known as Science Square, part of the development of Science Central, a partnership between Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University, on the 24 acre former Scottish & Newcastle Brewery site. One of the biggest urban regeneration projects of its kind in the UK, Science Central was officially opened on Wednesday 25 February 2015 by Minister for Universities, Science & Cities, the Rt Hon Greg Clark MP.
Newcastle's 'new' co-op was built on Newgate Street in 1932. Although 'art decor' in style, it gave more than a nod to Egypt where Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb had just taken place. See http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm
