NZ1224 : Quoits Pitches outside The Kings Head, Cockfield
In this game, metal rings are tossed over pegs (hobs) embedded in a soft clay surface. The rules of the Northern Game, set out in 1881, has hobs protruding three to four inches, 11 yards apart, set in 3 feet squares of clay. The steel quoits have been standardised at 8 1/2 inches outside diameter, 5 1/2 inch hole and 5 1/4 lb (2.4kg) in weight.
Important officials are the 'Bibber', 'Shower up' or 'Coach' - the thrower's helper who stands by the target hob and shouts advice and encouragement, and the 'Trig-man' - an adjudicator who watches out for foot faults.
