How did it arise? Are the stems suckers from the roots of a parent tree, now absent; or are they seedlings, perhaps bird-sown, from the branches of a berrying parent tree? As young trees they seem strongly phototropic, in other words they grow towards the light; in their case, away from the all-year dense shade cast by evergreen holly. Groups of curving stems like this can be seen wherever there is holly woodland in Sutton Park.
Sutton Park :: SP1196

Sutton Park occupies over 2,000 acres to the north of Birmingham and immediately west of Sutton Coldfield town centre. It includes heathland, woodland, wetland and marshes and has seven lakes. It was originally established as a royal forest by the Anglo-Saxon Kings of Mercia and became a deer park in Norman times. The park was given to the people of Sutton Coldfield in 1528 by the King at the behest of Bishop John Vesey and is currently managed by Birmingham City Council. It has been designated as a National Nature Reserve by English Nature.
