9-17 Collingwood Street, Newcastle
A lavish and most impressive palazzo, the Classical orders dispensed with but showing copious use of Gibbs surrounds (NZ2463 : Detail of 9-17 Collingwood Street, Newcastle (1)). All in the smoothest ashlar apart from the red granite plinth and entrance. By R.J. Johnson, 1888-91, for Hodgkin, Barnett, Pease, Spencer & Co.'s bank, whose cheque books must have been very long. Grade II listed.
For once, this has not been converted to a bar, but is still a bank, Allied Irish Bank.
