A distinguished entry in Newcastle's distinguished roster of bridges. The listing describes it as "one of the finest pieces of architectural iron work in the world". By Robert Stephenson, 1845-49, with T.E. Harrison. Its 1400-foot length is taken by six main spans over the water, behind the cast iron ribs and wrought iron chains of which is the road, and above which is the railway. Grade I listed.
