taken 10 years ago, near to Hincaster, Cumbria, England

The east portal of the Hincaster Tunnel
The east portal of the Hincaster Tunnel
Lined with 4 million locally-made bricks, at the time of its completion - Christmas Day, 1817 - this was the largest brick-built structure in the north west of England. There is no towpath and horses were led over the hill, meaning that boats had to be hauled through by rope/cable or 'legged' through - two 'leggers' would be needed due to the width.
