Another grand palace of commerce, on this occasion by Austin, Johnson & Hicks, 1878, in a free Classical style. The right-hand of the two facing bays belongs to additions of c1890. Fluted Ionic pilasters and multi-storey rustication. Entrance round the corner (NZ2464 : Detail of Northern Assurance Buildings, Collingwood Street, Newcastle). Grade II listed.
