Haltwhistle Burn at Cawfields
Haltwhistle Burn at Cawfields
The site of a Roman watermill was excavated in 1907-8 in the field on the west bank of the burn just south of Hadrian's Wall and the crossing of the Military Way. It is now covered by a quarry spoil-heap. Excavations uncovered the remains of a square stone building and several large millstones. It was interpreted as a water-powered mill with an undershot wheel, dating to the third century.
