SJ2299 : Wind Turbines at Burbo Bank, Liverpool Bay
taken 10 years ago, 4 km WNW of Great Burbo Bank [other Features], Sefton, Great Britain

The Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm is a 25-turbine, 90 MW offshore wind farm located on the Burbo Flats in Liverpool Bay on the west coast of the UK in the Irish Sea. Construction began in June 2006. The site, located on Burbo Flats in Liverpool bay (approx 7 km northwest of Wirral and 6 km west of the Sefton coastline) was selected due to shallow water depths (0.5 to 8m at low tide) and high wind speeds. It became commercially operational by the end of 2007 and is expected to have an operational life of 25 years.
Construction of the extension to the windfarm began in June 2016. The Burbo Bank Extension offshore wind farm development consists of an area of 40 kmē (equivalent to nearly 6000 football pitches) and will add another 32 turbines extending the capacity by a further 258 MW, generating enough energy to meet the average needs of up to 230,000 homes.
