Sailing barge 'Pudge' motoring in the Colne estuary
Pudge had taken part in the 2015 Colne match, but failed to finish the course under sail and was motoring home.
This shot shows one of the barge's leeboards, the characteristic fin-like structures which a sailing barge - being flat-bottomed - possesses instead of a keel. Each board is pivoted at its forward end, so that when tacking, the one on the leeward side of the ship is lowered, while the other is winched clear of the water. Leeboards work in much the same way as the retractable centre-board on a sailing dinghy - counteracting leeward drift and making the vessel steerable.
