Dewberry (Rubus caesius), Tyne Riverside Country Park
'The dewberry is very apt to be mistaken for the blackberry; but it may be easily distinguished by its fruit being not so large, and being covered with blue bloom similar to that seen on plums: it has a very pleasant taste, and is said to communicate a grateful flavour to red wine when steeped in it.'
The Botanist's Companion, Vol. II, by William Salisbury (1816).
In my (limited) experience (and knowing brambles there may well be some variation) the swollen, separate drupes of the dewberry appeared to me to be almost tasteless, and as the plant doesn't appear to be a prolific fruiter compared to blackberries in the nearby hedgerow, picking them in any number would be less than worthwhile.
