The Duke of Sutherland's Luncheon House
Earlier submissions have variously described this as a hut, shed, sheiling or bothy, but Donald Bain
NC5510 : The Duke Of Sutherland's Luncheon Hut gives an excellent account of what it really is. The 3rd Duke of Sutherland's land reclamation project, to turn 2000 acres [800ha] of wet, rough moorland into arable land in the late 19thC was the largest in the UK. At its peak there were 14 Fowler stationary steam engines pulling heavy ploughs back and forth across the landscape, and employed hundreds of men. The Duke would travel in his private train along his private railway from Golspie to Lairg, transfer to a steam launch which would take him and his guests along Loch Shin to the shore just beyond the house, to which he would be conveyed by a coach and pair of greys. There he would inspect the works and entertain his guests. For a wooden structure built in the 1870s it seems in remarkably good condition.
