The former church of St Matthew - In 1764 a village here was cleared away along with the medieval church in order to enlarge the estate. In 1826 this Grade II listed church was built and used privately by the estate. The nearby Normanton Hall was pulled down in 1925. In the 1970s, when Rutland Water was created, the church was deconsecrated, the lower half was filled with stone and rubble, a concrete floor was added, and an embankment was built around the church to protect it as the lower half would be eventually be below water level. It later became a museum, but is now used for private functions such as civil weddings. I photographed this when there was a wedding party there. The car was a white Rolls Royce.
