The bridge carries the Cumbrian Coastal Line over the Esk. It was built in the 1860s as part of the construction of the Whitehaven and Furness Junction Railway, which connected Foxfield Junction (at the head of the Duddon estuary) with the town of Whitehaven, and linked in to the Furness Railway at Foxfield, and to the Whitehaven Junction Railway in the north.
