The focal point of each room inside the school is an open roof structure which supports the heavy stone flags above. In this room, the right hand beams are 'fake'; they are not holding up the roof but are merely there to make the roof look symmetrical. The real roof beams are visible in the corridor outside.

The woodwork around the fireplace reflects the style of the architrave around the doors. The art nouveau script lettering (SD8706 : Fireplace Detail, Long Street Methodist School) above the fireplace are the initials of people who donated money towards the building of the church.
Long Street Methodist Church and Schools (The Edgar Wood Centre)

Long Street Methodist Church and Schools are a striking complex of connected buildings arranged around a courtyard garden. The complex was designed by local architect Edgar Wood and completed in 1901. They were built in the Arts and Crafts style which was in vogue from the 1880s up to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. The Arts and Crafts movement was inspired by people such as William Morris and Augustus Pugin who looked back nostalgically to the Middle Ages when bands of travelling craftsmen built the Mediæval churches of England. This was in contrast to the Victorian tomes in which they lived and the mass production that was the hallmark of the Industrial Revolution. Today, the school is the Middleton Edgar Wood Centre, a place for community events, heritage activities and functions.

The complex is registered as a grade II* listed building (English Heritage Building ID: 213450 LinkExternal link British Listed Buildings).
