London (Chelsea), 1988: north end of Albert Bridge, with its strange notice
Conveying only a B-road (B304), the unusual NOTICE reads: 'ALL TROOPS MUST BREAK STEP WHEN MARCHING OVER THIS BRIDGE'. It was not unknown for troops marching in step to shake down a suspension bridge, e.g. Broughton Bridge near Salford (Manchester) in 1831.
The park was first laid out in 1856-57 by dumping what was excavated from the Royal Victoria Dock into what was then unreclaimed swamp. [VISITOR's LONDON, 1973]
