The Dahlia is a native of Mexico and was adopted as their national plant in 1963. The tubers were grown as a food crop by the Aztecs, something that never caught on in the west. As a popular garden plant, a huge variety of flower sizes and shapes are aided by the plant's complex genetic makeup. However, the colour blue has not yet been achieved despite a prize of £2,000 offered in 1846 by the Caledonia Horticultural Society of Edinburgh.

Halls of Heddon, Garden Centre

Halls of Heddon were established in 1921 and have become one of the UK's leading dahlia specialists stocking over 250 varieties in a wide range of colours and classifications which can be used for cut Flowers, exhibiting or garden display. Each year they produce almost 100,000 Dahlia plants and 40,000 Chrysanthemum plants.

The Dahlia fields are planted out 2nd week June, and are open for viewing from mid August to end September each year. Almost 6500 plants are in the fields in nearly 350 varieties including 75 or so on trial from amateur breeders and from growers overseas.
