Tyne pedestrian and cycle tunnel
The rotunda houses the entrance to the Tyne pedestrian and cycle tunnel which links Jarrow on the south bank with Howdon on the north bank. The tunnel was opened in 1951 and is a Grade 2 listed structure.

Currently this ageing tunnel is undergoing a major refurbishment program at a cost of nearly £7 million. At least, it WAS undergoing major refurbishment. Work started in May 2013 and was anticipated would take a year. In March 2015, the main contractors for the project went into administration. The latest estimate for completion - assuming that some means of recommencing work can be found - is summer 2016! Meanwhile, a replacement bus service is providing a rather unsatisfactory alternative service.
