L6557 : Folded outcrop

taken 4 years ago, near to Crockaunroe and Moyard, Galway, Ireland

Folded outcrop
Folded outcrop
Intensely deformed rocks belonging to the Dalradian Lakes Marble Formation at outcrop by the church at Crockaunroe. While the appearance is not that of a classic marble, it is probable that calcite-rich layers are being eroded preferentially here. The Lakes Marble Formation is host to many of the long inlets and areas of low ground which follow the east-west strike of the beds, being more easily eroded. In this case the low land is occupied by Loch Bhaile na Cille, the glacier not having quite eroded down to sea level, but at 7m AOD it is close. See L6358 : Phormium windbreak for the feature.
