Hadrian's Wall Trail east of Thirlwall Castle
A group of American visitors descend the hill on Hadrian's Wall Trail, bound for an overnight stay in Gilsland. Although the Wall itself is not visible in this section, the defensive ditch just to its north is very prominent to the left of the path. Taken from a location just below the site of Milecastle 46, the Vallum, which ran very close to the Wall for a short distance to its east, has now swung to the south, its ditch some distance away in the field just visible on the left. The line of the Military Way also swung southwards taking up a parallel position between the two major earthworks.
Below the walkers are the trees on the east side of the Tipalt Burn, crossed on the trail by a footbridge in a small hamlet in the shadow of Thirlwall Castle. The fine stone-built house on the right is Balmoral which stands alongside the B6318 road between Greenhead and Gilsland NY6566 : Balmoral House near Longbyre.
On the left is the farm of Wall End, north of Haltwhistle Golf Course, with the remaining features of Hadrian's Wall distinct in the direction of Chapel House. Its line is much less prominent beyond as it approaches the farm of Gap and village of Gilsland.
