The stone built dam that holds Lake Vyrnwy was built in the 1880s and was the first of its kind in the world.
It flooded the head of the Vyrnwy valley and submerged the small village of Llanwddyn. It provides the area of Merseyside with fresh water.
On the far side of the lake is the reservoir's straining tower; its purpose is to filter or strain out material in the water with a fine metal mesh, before the water flows along the aqueduct to Liverpool.
The area around the lake is a popular retreat for ornithologists, cyclists, and hikers.
