Running the last rapid on the Upper Tummel
Running the last rapid on the Upper Tummel
The Upper Tummel is quite a short run, though with quite a lot of interest. It is quite possible to continue downstream of this drop to Tummel Bridge, but there is only one minor rapid. Since the release was scheduled to have already finished at the Dunalastair dam less than 2 km upstream and we didn't want to find ourselves paddling a rapidly dropping river, we got off just below this point, where there is the last easy road access, river left.

Although the rock band forming this drop is river-wide, at this flow, nearly all the water was concentrated in this one channel, dropping about 2.5 metre, with half of that being down a smooth angled slab into a big wave and aerated water in which it takes a bit of skill to remain upright. For the more ambitious, just to the right of the paddler is a circular rockmill eddy which is quite hard to make, with the risk of doing the last bit of the drop backwards if you just miss it!
