Track across Surrender Ground winds between mine waste
The old bridleway over Great Pinseat starts its descent over Surrender Ground meandering between great quantities of mining waste still so rich in lead salts that very little will grow here. In the background, the smoke rises not from lead smelting, but from heather burning, to aid regeneration of young shoots in this heavily managed environment for Grouse shooting.
The small yellow pennant indicates another unnatural use of this land, being one of many indicating the route of the Scott Trial annual trials bike event. This event (at least in my experience in 2014) has an appalling record of rendering the public roads impassable, not by anything the competitors do (they after all, are out there cutting up the moor, nowhere near the metalled roads) but by wholly inadequate marshalling of inconsiderate spectators and their atrociously parked vehicles. I count myself lucky this year in having seen evidence that the event is about to occur (there's nothing else posted to indicate the upcoming inconvenience) so I will be able to avoid the area at the weekend...
